“Why the fuck do you care?” Saige snapped, wiping the tears from her eyes.
Don stopped dead in his tracks. “Excuse me?” he asked in disbelief.
“What the fuck do you give a damn what happens to me?” she said once more.
“Well, silly me I thought that we were in a relationship and you loved me.” Don said snidely. “But apparently I was mistaken.”
“Yeah well I’ve been *loved* before and look what happened!” she snapped back.
Don sighed. He didn’t know what was wrong with Saige but since Mac left for his conference three days ago, she had been spiraling out of control and becoming a hateful bitch.
Running his hand through his hair Don said softly, “I’m sorry Saige. For whatever you are upset about I’m sorry.”
Turning and slowly walking up the stairs he said, “Good night.”
Saige was standing there, itching for a fight and disappointed that Don wasn’t cooperating. She heard the bedroom door close softly and something inside of her broke, making her realize what she did.
She stood there staring up the stairs for a few minutes then she quietly slipped out of the house. She needed to get her head back on straight and then apologize to Don for treating him so badly.
Three hours later Saige quietly entered the house and made her way up to the bedroom. Knocking on the door quietly she waited a few minutes and was about to walk away when Don opened the door.
“I’m sorry Don,” she said softly handing him a single thornless red rose.
“I just don’t understand what I did.” Don said softly the hurt evident in his tone.
“Oh baby, you didn’t do anything.” She said putting her hand on his bare chest. “This time of year is hard on me Don. It’s the anniversary of the first time Michael put me in the hospital. I always handle it badly.”
“Saige…” Don said before he was interrupted.
“There’s no excuse for how I treated you, but I wanted to say I am so sorry for hurting you so badly.” She said. “I’m going to sleep upstairs tonight; I can imagine you don’t want me around tonight.”
She turned to walk away and Don put his hand on her shoulder. “Don’t go.” He said softly.
Looking over her shoulder at Don, he continued, “Not having either of you here is hell for me. You’re having a hell of a time, so let me hold you and we can get each other through it. I love you Saige.”
Letting Don pull her back into his arms and then into the bed.
They laid there holding each other talking and playing with the rose, until they succumbed to sleep.
That is how Mac found him the next morning, laying in each others arms with the single red rose laying on Don’s chest under their intertwined hands.
