TITLE: A Visitor From The Past
Saige was home when the phone rang. It was Mac. Smiling she smiled and picked up the phone and said, “Hey sexy, how’s your day going?”
Mac growled deep in his throat, he loved it when she used that voice on him. “Minx!”
Saige laughed. “I aim to torment.”
“You do a good job of it too. Don’s taught you well.” He murmured in that voice she loved so much, that was reserved just for her and Don.
“He did.” She chuckled. “So sexy what are you calling me in the middle of the afternoon for?”
“How badly would you kill me if I said we have two people coming to dinner tonight?” Mac asked sheepishly.
For a split second Saige felt a stab of fear before she squashed it down, “It won’t be any trouble at all. Is there anything in particular you would like me to fix?” she asked a bit to cheerfully.
Mac noticed the slight pause and was tempted to call the whole thing off. But it had been a while since he had seen his friend and he wanted to make this brief stay in
“You sure baby?” Mac asked hesitantly.
“Absolutely.” She said still cheerful. “You know I love to cook.”
Smiling Mac said, “How about that sinfully delicious lasagna of yours? Do you have time?”
“When will you be home?” she asked mentally calculating the time.
“We can be home later if needed,” Mac said.
“Well it’s 1:00 now, I can have it done by 6:30.” She said. “You’re lucky, I was planning on making lasagna tonight anyway so I have the stuff here.”
“I love you, you know that?” Mac said softly with a smile.
“I love you too Sexy.” She said softly.
“See you at 6 baby.” Mac said as he blew her a kiss and hung up the phone.
Hanging up the phone Saige started making dinner.
Saige was just putting the finishing touches on the dinner salad when she heard the front door open and the voices she loved so much floated into the kitchen.
She was just going to go out and greet them when the oven dinged and she had to pull the bread out to start cooling. She smiled when she felt strong arms wrap around her waist.
“Hi blue.” She said softly with a smile. “How was your day?”
Leaning down and kissing her bare neck Don said, “Hi minx, work was alright, but I’m glad to be home.”
Leaning into his arms she asked, “Mac changing?”
“No, he sent me up to change first, but I had to come in and say hi to my girl.” Don said sheepishly.
Laughing she pushed at his hands and said, “Then go change you little shit. Dinner will be ready in about 10 minutes.”
Smiling and kissing her neck once more Don said, “Yes ma’am.” And hurried of out the room.
Mac came to the door and stood watching Saige work her magic in the kitchen. He loved her more and more every day and he was always amazed by what she cooked.
“You gonna stand there all day or you gonna come give me a proper greeting?” she teased him.
Smiling evilly and taking up the challenge Mac came up behind her, swung her around and kissed her deeply. A few minutes later he pulled back and chuckled at the look on Saige’s face.
“Was that good enough for you?” he growled.
All she could do was nod which caused him to laugh even more. Looking around to make sure there was nothing pressing Mac took her hand and said softly, “Come and meet our dinner guests.”
Following Mac out of the room and fighting her flight instincts Saige didn’t realize she had a death grip on Mac’s hand. Mac stopped at the stairs and waited for Don to move to come down and move to Saige’s other side. Both men had known that she was apprehensive about meeting new people and they wanted to both be next to her to let her know she was safe.
Walking into the living room the first person Saige saw was Danny and she smiled and visibly relaxed. Subconsciously she knew that if Danny was there along with Mac and Don she would be safe no matter what.
“Hey Saige,” Danny said as he came up to her and gave her a hug. “Dinner smells wonderful.”
Hugging Danny back she smiled and said, “Hi Danny, it’s good to see you again. You really must come to dinner more often.”
“Now how could I resist an invitation like that?” Danny said with a smile.
Taking the initiative Saige said, “Well then I expect to see you for dinner at least twice a week regardless if Mac or Don are here or not.”
Seeing Don and Mac smiling he nodded solemnly and said, “Yes ma’am, twice a week.”
A movement in the corner caught her attention.
“Who’s your friend Danny? Do I finally get to meet the man in your life?” she teased.
Danny blushed and looked up at her through his eyelashes, “Yeah, he is in town for a few days and Mac asked us to dinner.”
Leaning in she said softly with a bright smile that she reserved for her friends, “So introduce us silly goose.”
Danny stepped back and went over to his friend. When Saige saw his hair she stepped back and jerked her hands out of Don and Mac’s.
“No,” she whispered. “Not again.”
Don and Mac looked between her and Danny and wondered what was upsetting her so much.
“I…I’m s…so…sorry…I have…have to go.” She said as she slowly backed away from the men towards the door.
Mac hurried to her and took her hand saying softly, “Saige it’s okay, Horatio is a friend of ours, he won’t hurt you.”
Saige shook her head and looked up at Mac, “Mac, I…”
A movement caught her attention and she froze like a frightened rabbit. It wasn’t the man that caught her attention, but what he had in his hand and seeing that helped calm her down a bit.
“A sunflower.” She said softly. “Sunflowers are safe.”
“Hello Saige,” a voice from her past floated to her ears.
Looking up she looked into the caring blue eyes of a savior from her past.
“Horatio,” she whispered, tears springing to her eyes.
“Hello Saige,” Horatio said softly, “I’m sorry I startled you.”
Finally coming out of her shock, she smiled and said, “It’s nice to see you Horatio. How have you been?”
Smiling and giving her a look that she knows he only uses on people he cares about, he said, “I’ve been good.”
“Liar,” she said as she winked at him and gave him a hug. “I know you better than that. And you’re coming to dinner every night while you’re here. Unless you and Danny have other plans. I’ve missed you and Christina.”
Horatio smiled and pulled her into a hug. “I think we can arrange something.”
The oven dinged and Mac asked softly, “What’s left to do Saige?”
Pulling out of Horatio’s hug she smiled at everyone and said, “Just bringing everything to the table. Don, if you would get the bread and salad, Mac will you cut the lasagna and put it on the table, Horatio you can sit anywhere, Danny will you light the candles and I’ll grab the wine and put the Sunflowers in a vase. Then we can eat.”
Everyone hurried to get the table set. Once done they spent the next few hours just talking and spending a pleasant evening together.
At the end of the night Saige ended up falling asleep on the couch with her head on Mac’s shoulder. Horatio and Danny leaned down and gave her a kiss on the forehead before Mac carried her upstairs for the night.
Two hours later Danny and Horatio left with a promise to come by for dinner the next night, only this time they would bring dinner.
That night Saige slept nightmare free for the first time in years. Instead her dreams were filled with happy memories of Dr. Christina Caine and the few times Saige had met Dr. Caine’s cousin Horatio.
